Ohio Hospital Compare Helps Patients Make Health Care Decisions

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) launched the Ohio Hospital Compare website to help Ohioans make more informed health-care decisions. The website helps patients take charge of their medical care and helps ensure that they receive quality treatment by providing information on hospitals' processes and treatment results.

A 2006 Ohio law required that an online database containing hospital data and statistics be established by 2010 to create greater hospital transparency. Accordingly, the ODH created the Ohio Hospital Compare website in conjunction with the Hospital Measures Advisory Council, whose purpose was to select appropriate performance measures for use by the public while minimizing the reporting burden on hospitals.

Using the interactive website, patients can make side-by-side comparisons of hospitals on more than 100 statistics in many categories of illnesses, injuries and hospital procedures, including:

  • Heart attack and heart failure
  • Stroke
  • Pneumonia
  • Surgical care
  • Infection protection and hospital acquired infections
  • Children's asthma
  • Pregnancy and delivery care
  • Patient safety and satisfaction

Patients can take control of their health care and make educated decisions on where to receive treatment by researching the level of care provided and results achieved at hospitals across Ohio. They can also make an effort to avoid medical malpractice or negligence by health-care providers by choosing the safest and most experienced hospitals for care. The information available on the Ohio Compare Hospital website is extremely helpful and is an important resource when making informed health-care decisions.
