Doctor alleged to have accidentally removed healthy ovary

When a 31-year-old woman was told by her doctor that she had a mass on her left ovary that appeared to be a cyst, she was rightly concerned. A second ultrasound indicated that the cyst was still present. The woman's obstetrician recommended that the woman undergo surgery to remove the cyst in order to avoid any future complications. An outpatient surgery was scheduled to remove the cyst.

The woman's understanding was that only the cyst on her left ovary would be removed, leaving most of her left ovary intact. The woman alleges that during the procedure her doctor did not remove the cyst on her left ovary and instead, completely removed the woman's healthy right ovary and fallopian tube. The patient and her husband have filed a medical malpractice suit against the doctor.

The woman not only has lost her healthy ovary, but still has a cyst on her one remaining ovary which still must be removed. The patient alleges that by operating on the wrong body part and performing a different procedure than the woman had consented to, the surgery left her with a significantly diminished fertility and caused damage to her marriage.

After the initial surgery, in which the woman expected to have only the cyst on her left ovary removed, the patient noticed pelvic pain on her right side. Over the next few weeks the patient went back to the doctor twice describing the pain, but the doctor apparently never acknowledged that the wrong ovary had been removed.

Just less than a month after the botched surgery the woman went to another medical center to be examined. There, a scan showed that she still had a tumor on her left ovary, and that her right ovary had been completely removed.

I have always heard of things like this happening and now I am experiencing the same exact thing. 5 days ago I went into my local hospital to have a laparoscopic procedure to remove my right ovarian complex cyst, possible removal of that ovary and any scar tissue he may find. After surgery the dr. came out to talk to my husband and told him everything went well and that he removed my right ovary and tube and also some scar tissue. He also showed my husband photos of the procedure and said he was shocked that he didn't find what he expected to find and things looked a lot better than he thought. After 3 days of being in pain at home I went to the emergency room as it was weekend telling them something wasn't right. They ran tests and also an ultrasound, during the ultrasound the tech was pointing out to me that I have a large complex cyst on my RIGHT ovary...I thought she must have been mistaken and told her that wasn't possible, I just had that ovary removed. Could it be my left ovary. She kept looking, compared my old ultrasound to the new one and there was no mistake. I had my right ovary with the same cyst and my left ovary was gone. I am so upset about this. I am so saddened to see others have gone through the same issue...How does this happen?
