Brachial Plexus Nerve Transfers: What 10 Years Of Data Tells Us

On Tuesday, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) held its annual meeting. The AANS event featured a group of researchers who studied more than 10 years of data on nerve transfers in brachial plexus injury patients. Their findings bring a wealth of important information regarding treatment of this birth injury.

The study involved an in-depth review of 107 patients who underwent nerve transfer surgery aimed to improve elbow flexion. The patients' progress was measured using the Medical Research Council (MRC) grading scale, so the results could be measured objectively. The study's authors made some important findings.

"The most important results we found in our evaluation was the significantly better outcome for the Oberlin procedure and the transfer of pectoral nerve to musculocutaneous nerve, in contrast to transfer of spinal accessory nerve or phrenic nerve to musculocutaneous nerve," said Julia Oberhoffer, MD.

Children born with brachial plexus injuries deserve a normal childhood, and studies like the one presented at the AANS meeting are crucial for achieving this goal.

If your child has suffered brachial plexus injuries due to medical negligence, contact an experienced Ohio birth injury lawyer to explore your rights to recovering money damages.
