Charter Bus Crashes On I-70 In Columbus, 15 Children Injured

On Sunday, 16 students and three adults were riding in a bus when it crashed in Columbus. The bus was travelling from St. Louis to New York when the driver lost control while exiting Interstate 70 toward Interstate 270.

A total of 19 people, including 15 children, were taken to Columbus hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, the injuries were minor and all the passengers were able to make the trip back to Queens, after changing buses. The children had participated in a robotics competition on Saturday. The cause of the bus accident is still being investigated.

The Maryland charter bus company involved, Carpet Ride LLC, was already under investigation by Maryland officials for possible safety violations. The scrutiny will now be ratcheted up, and Carpet Ride should anticipate a license revocation or suspension.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has struggled to regulate the charter bus industry. When a bus operation gets shut down for safety violations, it usually reopens, days later, with no more than a changed name and a fresh coat of paint. Known as "chameleon buses," these enterprises are involved in a high percentage of accidents in what is otherwise a relatively safe industry.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a bus crash, speak with an experienced Ohio bus accident attorney to discuss your legal options for recovering compensation.
