Elective Deliveries: On The Outs At Hospitals, Risks Remain, Pt. 1

As many of are readers already know, obstetricians in Ohio and around the nation often allow or even encourage elective delivery procedures. Elective procedures include everything from early inductions to voluntary (read: unnecessary) c-sections.

Despite the appeal that these procedures may have for expectant mothers who are ready to give birth and welcome a new child into the world, they introduce an unnecessary risk of serious delivery complications. For example, if a c-section is not truly necessary for the mother or child's safety, should mothers be exposed to the risks associated with this surgical procedure?

Sadly, some doctors deliberately encourage elective deliveries as a convenience measure. It is not uncommon to hear of a doctor recommending a c-section or unnecessary episiotomy-simply because it would be personally inconvenient to stay on-call until the mother delivers without assistance.

More and more medical experts are beginning to agree that hospitals should actively discourage most elective deliveries. As a result of this developing consensus, hospitals around the country are taking steps to prohibit elective procedures.

Check back for more details on this welcome improvement, including the experience of one Ohio hospital.
