Survey Warns Of Unnecessary Delivery Interventions, Part 1

According to a recent survey conducted by a nonprofit maternity and childbirth-focused organization, many pregnant women undergo unnecessary, invasive and potentially dangerous procedures. This research has troubling implications for expecting mothers in Ohio and around the nation - another indication that the medical profession needs to continue refining care standards.

The survey looked at 2,400 women who recently gave birth. Taken as a whole, a number of findings suggest that doctors and other medical providers are not adhering to guidelines and best practices regarding intervention procedures.

Intervention procedures include early inductions using increasingly controversial drugs, c-sections that are not medically necessary and epiosotomies. More than four of every ten survey participants reported that doctors had induced labor. Many doctors induce labor for concerning reasons that suggest the true motivation is the doctor's own convenience. For example, some doctors induce labor simply because a baby is large.

While inductions are certainly important for some deliveries, they can also lead to dangerous birthing complications. Check back later for more on this survey and its implications for Ohio mothers.
