Motorist whose car killed teen jailed

A male motorist whose car crashed into another vehicle, killing its teen driver, has been sentenced to three months in jail. He will be allowed out part of the time on work release as part of a deal worked out with the prosecution. The motorist, who was also a teenager at the time, and his 16-year-old male passenger were both hospitalized after the accident, but their injuries were classified as non-life-threatening.

Teen drivers are frequently involved in Ohio car accidents. The accident occurred in Columbiana County, Ohio, near the intersection of Knox School Road and Hartley Road. The defendant's car, a Toyota Celica, struck a 19-year-old man's Chevrolet Cavalier, inflicting critical injuries that caused the driver's death.

The defendant, who has since turned 20, pled guilty to charges of vehicular homicide. In addition to the three months of incarceration, he will be on probation for three years, have to pay a $750 fine, and have his driving privileges limited for a period of two years to only driving to and from church, counseling, school or work. The dead teen's mother and sister addressed the court and described the anguish of senselessly losing their loved one at such an early age.

In addition to criminal sanctions for vehicular homicide, motorists who drive recklessly or are negligent in the operation of a motor vehicle, are subject to civil lawsuits for wrongful death, as well as personal injury claims by anyone injured in an accident. Damages can be awarded to pay for medical and funeral expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages. Following such an accident, it is important to quickly consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to make sure all claims are presented in a timely and proper manner.
