Ohio couple wins $6.4 million in medical malpractice suit

Those in Franklin, Ohio, might like to know about this case about a 59-year-old man who suffered an acute stroke due to medical malpractice. According to the report, the man had been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse in 1996 and had not been ordered to have any follow-up appointments for the condition after his last echocardiogram in 2001.

According to the 59-year-old man from Maryland Heights, Mo., he had spoken to his doctor in April of 2007 about having fatigue, abdominal pain, and a loss of appetite. Reports showed that the doctor had sent the man to other doctors for tests, but none of the treatment plan had included a referral to a cardiologist or tests for his heart. In May, 2007, the man's wife had him admitted into the hospital.

The man suffered from an acute stroke on June 12, 2007, due to a bacterial infection on his heart valve. He suffered a serious injury as a result, and now has limited use of the right side of his body. He also has damage to his short-term memory and has trouble trying to process words. According to the man's attorney, he has not been able to work since the stroke.

The 59-year-old man and his wife sued the doctor, who was part of the SSM DePaul Medical Group. The couple believed that the infection could have been diagnosed and treated effectively if the physician had not been negligent.

If a jury decides that medical treatment was negligent, a hospital or doctor will have to pay damages to the victim. In this case, on July 9, a jury agreed that the doctor had been negligent and awarded the couple $6.4 million. This is the largest payout in the state to date for medical malpractice.

Medical malpractice may result in minor or traumatic pain and suffering. While financial compensation may not restore the health of someone you love, you have very right to seek competent legal aid to recover damages and a sense of justice by holding negligent parties responsible.
