Ohio State campus bus kills bicycle rider

An Ohio State campus bus driven by a 21-year-old male student recently struck and killed a 65-year-old male bicycle rider close to the intersection of Summit Street and Chittenden Avenue in Columbus. The bicyclist was hospitalized for his injuries and died later that same day. Bicyclists are frequently involved in fatal Ohio car accidents.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. The bus driver reported seeing the bike rider travel close to the curb of the street, going between two cars parked on the side. He stated he thought the bike rider intended to stay there and wait for the bus to go by. As the bus started to pass, the bike rider fell off of his bike and under the rear right tire on the bus, according to the bus driver's version of the accident.

A witness to the incident stated that it was unclear whether or not the bicyclist hit one of the parked cars before he fell. The witness tried to do chest compressions on the injured man, who had stopped breathing. When medics arrived on the scene, the bicyclist, was breathing again and was rushed to a local hospital.

The investigation by police of the accident is ongoing and is pending the results of an autopsy on the man. Students on the Columbus campus said the accident reminded them of the possible dangers of bike riding in and around the campus area.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident, you may be able to pursue personal injury or wrongful death claims against the driver or their employer. Consult with an Ohio experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to learn more about your rights and options, and to ensure all evidence and witness statements are gathered and preserved.
