Motorcycle-car crash prompts new intersection signs

After a recent crash involving a motorcycle and a car at the intersection of State Route 162 and Ryan Road, Lafayette Township, Ohio, officials are planning to see to it that additional traffic warning signs are erected. They are seeking assistance from state law enforcement and transportation agencies to make this dangerous intersection just a little safer.

During the recent accident, a 31 year-old male motorcycle rider was headed in a western direction on Route 162. He hit a car that pulled out in front of him on Ryan Road. He suffered serious injuries. The 66-year-old male motorist in the other vehicle also suffered injuries, which were classified as minor. Many Ohio motorcycle accidents result in severe injury to motorcyclists.

The latest accident was one in a series of crashes at the intersection, which does have stop signs on Ryan Road. Traffic on Route 162, however, is not required to stop at the intersection. The new signs will be posted on the east and west sides of the roadway, warning traffic that the upcoming intersection is dangerous. This will hopefully prompt motorists to proceed with caution. Additional signs on Ryan Road would also serve as a reminder to drivers there that the intersecting traffic on Route 162 has no obligation to stop and has the right of way.

Officials are concerned about the number of accidents that have occurred at the intersection and about their severity. They want to take action to reduce the likelihood of additional crashes, a laudable goal. Such action may both save lives and reduce possible liability. Officials believe that ultimately, a solar-powered LED stop sign or a red and yellow flashing light may be desirable at the intersection. Records indicate that a minimum of six accidents took place at the intersection last winter. The state highway patrol has stepped up traffic enforcement efforts in the area.
