Truck accident kills 1, injures 44 on bus

A collision between a tractor-trailer and a Greyhound bus headed for Cleveland, Ohio, resulted in the death of one woman bus passenger, and injuries to 44 others aboard the bus. The accident occurred in the early morning hours in Union County on Interstate 80. The 36-year-old tractor-trailer driver asserted that the bus struck him in the rear while he was westbound on the highway, traveling at approximately the speed limit.

As with many Ohio truck accidents, there were numerous persons hurt, probably because of the weight of the vehicles involved. The truck driver was not injured. The westbound portion of the highway was closed off to traffic for a time after the accident at the Route 15 interchange, located in White Deer Township. The bus company sent a team to assist law enforcement and passengers in responding to the crash and safeguarding and retrieving passenger property.

The causes of the accident, which took place at about 1:44 a.m., were not immediately apparent. The 44 bus occupants injured represented the vast majority of the 50 persons aboard the bus, including the bus driver. The bus driver was among those reportedly in critical condition, as were four passengers. Two passengers were listed as in serious condition. The scope of the accident required the assistance of about 20 ambulances from five surrounding counties to transport injured victims to five nearby hospitals.

With accidents involving commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses, injured parties and the families of deceased accident victims may have viable person injury or wrongful death lawsuits against both a culpable driver and their respective employers. Often, fatigue is a factor in causing truck or bus accidents when drivers are required to work long hours by employers. Unfortunately, sometimes the abuse of drugs or alcohol also plays a role.
