Columbus woman paralyzed in car crash

A 20-year-old Columbus, Ohio, woman was paralyzed as a result of injuries suffered in a June 5 car crash. She was riding as a passenger in a car driven by a 20-year-old male friend who allegedly floored the gas pedal when police tried to get him to pull the vehicle over. This apparently caused the car to flip an estimated four times before slamming into three different trees. She suffered spinal cord injuries serious enough to leave her paralyzed.

The driver has been indicted on criminal charges of aggravated vehicular assault. He jumped from the car, police say, while the vehicle was still moving, leaving her in a swiftly moving car with no control to its movements.

The woman was almost killed, with all her vital signs flat-lining twice while she was hospitalized. She was transferred between three different hospitals over a five-month period and suffered a fractured neck, as well as the spinal cord injuries. She is finally now at home, but still paralyzed.

The driver allegedly failed to show up in court and has failed to turn himself in, despite his victim's urging that he do so. People who follow him on Facebook reported that he posts about his active social life, and he has recently been seen driving around the city.

Irresponsible motorists who inflict such life altering injuries on others, such as innocent passengers or other motorists, need to be held accountable both criminally and civilly, and should bear the financial burden of providing compensation for their victim's medical expenses, pain and suffering, and permanent disability. Spinal cord injuries can permanently alter a person's life, in which they are often unable to even perform the simplest daily tasks for themselves.
