Young man killed in truck accident

A 21-year-old man was killed while going home from the downtown Cincinnati post office when the car he was riding in was hit by a semi-truck. Also injured in the truck accident was his brother-in-law and coworker, who was driving. The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on I-75 close to Mitchell Avenue in the northbound lane.

Many Ohio truck accidents result in deaths or serious bodily injuries, some permanently disabling. In this instance, the car driver remained in the hospital weeks after the accident. He is now finally out of a coma but still recovering. The impact of the heavy weight of commercial trucks has a lot to do with the degree of damage commonly inflicted.

Ohio, according to statistics, ranks 10th in the nation for fatal accidents in which large trucks are involved based on the number of 2011 accidents. Large trucks are defined as weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Factors involved in truck accidents can include speeding, abuse of alcohol or drugs, distracted driving (such as from texting or cellphone use behind the wheel), and driving while fatigued. Truck driver fatigue can result from driving long shifts without adequate rest stops or time to sleep.

Wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits can provide needed compensation to truck accident victims and their families, but can never really make up for the tragic loss of a loved one. Nor can they really make up for the dreadful pain and suffering or long difficult road to recovery that truck accident victims who survive experience.
