Brain injury might lead to depression later in life

Suffering any type of injury is hard enough, but when that injury leads to problems later in life, the difficulty increases. Some injuries, such as concussions, can lead to mental health issues. Ohio residents might be interested to learn about the connection between multiple concussions and depression.

An animal study suggests that a head injury might cause an inflammatory response to later immune system challenges. This inflammatory response is linked to depressive complications. In people who have suffered from a traumatic brain injury, normal increased inflammation associated with aging is compounded by the magnified immune response of the injury. This immune response can occur with secondary challenges, such as infections or secondary brain injuries.

All of these findings could explain why people who suffered from multiple concussions in early adulthood may suffer from mental issues in midlife. The brain injuries associated with these findings are the concussive-type of brain injury. Concussive brain injuries are injuries that spread out the brain. Patients with this type of injury tend to recover quickly, usually within a week of the injury.

While there are a variety of reasons for concussive brain injuries, the treatment received for the brain injury is very important. If you or a loved one has suffered from a brain injury, ensuring that it was properly treated might help to stop problems in the future. If you feel the injury wasn't treated as it should, you might be able to receive compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other expenses. Getting help from an experienced Ohio personal injury legal professional might make determining the appropriate types of compensation a little easier. An experienced legal professional can also help to make navigating through the legal proceedings less stressful.
