Minor explosion impact can still cause brain damage

A new study of the impact of mild explosion injuries on active duty soldiers shows that they can still result in significant long term brain injuries. The result are important not only for those serving in the military, but for workers who come into contact with explosives as part of their work duties, such as when removing tree stumps from land or demolishing old buildings. There may have been instances where the failure to take adequate safety precautions around explosives at worksites have resulted in Ohio brain injuries.

The researchers, to detect the type of brain injuries caused by mild explosions, turned to diffusion tensor imaging, a specialized form of MRI scan. The study looked at 10 soldiers who were veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and suffered mild brain injuries as a result of explosives. The results of the examinations were compared to a group without such injuries. They found that the effects of even the mild injuries were long-lasting.

Those with the injuries had difficulties with their attention span, memory and psychomotor test scores. These kinds of injuries could certainly have an impact on the ability of an individual to successfully perform all kinds of work tasks, and affect their employment and income as a result - very possibly for life.

Injured employees who have been exposed to explosives should make sure that they get thoroughly evaluated for possible long-term traumatic brain injuries. The long-term nature of the problem should be factored into any claims for workers' compensation, disability benefits or personal injury lawsuits against non-employer parties responsible for such injuries.
