Ohio woman: Birth injuries killed my son

Obstetricians carry a significant amount of responsibility in making sure that children are born in a safe, healthy environment. They are also expected to provide adequate monitoring for all stages of pregnancy, ensuring that health problems do not lead to serious birth injuries, some of which might even lead to death. One Ohio woman contends that her obstetricians were so negligent that they failed to deliver her son before he grew to be too large for her body. The child died from birth injuries suffered at the Ohio medical facilities.

The lawsuit contends that the physicians failed to advise her to deliver her child earlier. When he was born the baby weighed 13 pounds, 12 ounces. Scientific reports show that the child was the size of most 3-month-old babies when he was delivered. News reports do not explain the exact condition that caused the child's death.

Three physicians are named in the suit, along with the OB/GYN Specialists of Lima. The woman is seeking more than $25,000 in connection with the incident, which she says will pay for medical and funeral costs. The woman is also looking to recover damages related to the mental anguish associated with her son's death. She argues that the doctors did not provide health care that complied with standards promulgated by the profession. The physicians in the case are of course requesting that the case be denied, as the woman's claim was filed too late and is voided by the statute of limitations. The woman's child died in June 2009.

Pregnant women do not automatically know about the medical conditions they could be facing during their pregnancies. They rely on physicians to provide them with adequate guidance and hands-on care throughout the experience. When those doctors fail, they should face punishment for their serious negligence. Victims of such personal injury deserve financial compensation for their serious birth injury losses.
