Vehicular manslaughter charges in fatal car crash

A 24-year-old male motorist is facing vehicular homicide charges in a fiery fatal crash in which his car hit a minivan on the Ohio Turnpike, killing an elderly couple inside it. Both were 77 years old and residents of Toledo.

Just as in many other Ohio car accidents, the car driven by the responsible motorist was speeding. Police said that it was traveling at a speed of more than 125 miles per hour and that both the car and minivan burst into flames when the collision occurred.

The car's driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is being subjected to a psychiatric examination. The driver reportedly covered a distance of about 60 miles after his speeding vehicle was reported, passing two state troopers who saw him pull far ahead of them. The accident occurred on Thanksgiving Day.

The investigation into the accident is continuing. There was no indication in published reports whether the abuse of drugs or alcohol played any role in causing the accident. Plainly though, the level of speed at which the car was said to be traveling at constitutes recklessness that is very likely to result in the kind of accident causing death and serious bodily injuries.

In such cases, criminal charges are indeed justified to both punish irresponsible drivers and to deter others from engaging in similar conduct. Just as important, however, is the filing of private lawsuits for personal injury or wrongful death by accident victims and their families to seek compensation and make the reckless parties be held responsible.
