Woman names multiple facilities and doctors in lawsuit

Though the standard of care is generally high in hospitals throughout the nation, residents of Franklin, Ohio, probably realize that mistakes can happen anywhere. In a medical setting, mistakes can range from purposeful neglect to failure to diagnose the right medical condition. When patients are injured as a result of those mistakes, they or their family members have a right to seek compensation for expenses or loss.

One woman in a nearby state is seeking damages of over $700,000 after her relative died of sepsis. According to the suit, the woman's death has led to grief and suffering for her relatives, as well as loss of companionship. The suit names four medical facilities and three physicians as defendants.

According to records, the now-deceased woman visited several medical facilities with complaints that included chills, fever, headache and a sore throat. She was originally diagnosed with strep throat. She visited the emergency room on Dec. 7 and was discharged on Dec. 8.

The woman died on Dec. 8 from respiratory shock and organ failure, which was caused by her sepsis. Among the allegations in the lawsuit are that the medical professionals failed to diagnose the woman's condition in time, failed to provide necessary treatment and failed to obtain a complete medical history that would identify the woman as being high risk for infection.

According to the law suit, the woman was given a gram stain test at the emergency room but was sent home before the results were complete. The hospital staff failed to notify the woman of the results and call her back for treatment in a timely manner, says the suit.
