Head-on collision results in 3 fatalities including young girl

A head-on crash between an SUV and a Jeep in Columbiana County, Ohio, resulted in the tragic death of three occupants of the SUV. The decedents included two volunteer firefighters, a 39-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife, as well as an 11-year-old girl riding as a passenger in their vehicle. There were five other children in the vehicle, which was en route to a family skating party. The other children all survived but were sent to various hospitals for treatment for their injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the other vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, was driven by a 31-year-old woman who was accompanied by her son. Both were injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening. Her Jeep apparently went left of center near mile post 4 in Wayne Township on State Route 516, colliding with the SUV, which was traveling in the opposite direction. The causes of the accident are not entirely clear, with the Highway Patrol saying that their investigation is ongoing.

That investigation will utilize the services of a crash reconstruction team, photographs of the aftermath of the accident and interviews with survivors. In many Ohio car accidents, abuse of alcohol or drugs is involved. Other common factors include speeding, reckless driving, motorist fatigue, mechanical problems or distracted driving from texting or cellphone use behind the wheel. Motorists responsible for causing accidents in this manner can be sued for wrongful death and/or personal injury. Such lawsuits play a positive role in compensating accident victims and their families, and in helping to deter others from engaging in reckless and irresponsible driving that causes a foreseeable risk of harm to others.
