Ohio truck accident caused by slow-moving truck

Eighteen-wheelers own the highways, whether they are going fast or slow. Accidents between these large trucks and cars, or other vehicles, can cause catastrophic injuries and property damage. Drivers of these vehicles know when they get behind the wheel that any reckless driving on their part can be deadly. They also know they must be alert and not sleep deprived.

In October of last year, on Interstate 80 in Union County, a Greyhound bus traveling at the normal speed limit of 65 plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer. The semi-truck was going at a slow speed down the interstate and did not have hazard lights on. State police determined that the Greyhound bus driver was not at fault in the accident.

The collision injured 40 of the 50 passengers on the bus, and one 37-year-old woman was killed. Several of the injuries were considered serious. The bus was traveling from New York to Cleveland.

After a thorough investigation, the driver of the truck was found to be at fault by state police. He has been charged with 15 summary motor vehicle charges. They did not charge him with vehicular homicide, but one of the charges was for allegedly driving his tractor-trailer in a manner that caused a death unintentionally. Other charges include careless and reckless driving, operating with a hazardous brake system and driving slow enough to impede the flow of traffic. The driver's fines totaled more than $4,600.

Ohio truck accidents are often the basis for wrongful death or personal injury lawsuits. Victims, or family members of deceased victims, in these kinds of accidents should be compensated for their injuries or losses when reckless or negligent driving has been the fault.
