Ohio car accidents in GM vehicle may be more dangerous

Ohio car accidents are common, from Columbus to Cleveland and everywhere in between. While some are the result of a driver mistake, others are caused by a defective vehicle.

According to research of government fatal crash data, a minimum of 74 people have died in accidents while driving in a General Motors' vehicle.

Reuters examined a national database of crash information, known as the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, paying close attention to single-car frontal collisions in which front airbags were not deployed and either the driver or the passenger in the front seat was killed. This kind of accident in the Saturn Ion and Chevy Cobalt, those among GM's recall of 2.6 million cars for a defective ignition switch, were compared to competitors such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Ford Focus.

The data shows that the frequency of these accidents in the Saturn Ions was twice that of the Focus and almost six times that of the Corolla. Furthermore, the Ion had 5.9 fatal crashes, based on the this criteria, per 100,000 cars sold. For the Cobalt, this number decreased slightly to 4.1.

There are many causes of Ohio car accidents. In the event of driver error or negligence, there is often one person to blame for the end result. In the case of defective vehicles, however, it is the manufacturer that has to take the blame for the accident. General Motors has found itself in this position as of late, thanks to a recall of more than 2 million vehicles with a faulty ignition switch.
