Ohio designates Safe Driving Awareness Month

Ohio car accidents are more common than they should be, because many of these are the result of a distracted driver, speeding or drinking and driving. Ohio Gov. John Kasich recently signed a bill designating every September to be Safe Driving Awareness Month throughout the state.

Nine months after a 21-year-old woman died in a car accident, the governor signed the bill in her honor. The woman's parents founded Maria's Message, a campaign with hopes of creating awareness of the dangers associated with distracted driving. Since getting started, the woman's father has visited 16 schools and has been successful in having approximately 8,000 students agree to a defensive driving pledge. The man said, "My pledge is to all those parents that are out there that have lost kids, that I am your advocate, that I want to be your advocate, my family wants to be your advocate."

Kasich realizes that Ohio car accidents could be cut down if more people realize that their phone can wait and that paying attention to the roadway is more important than anything else.

From this point forward, September will be Safe Driving Awareness Month in the state of Ohio. While this may be the official time of the year for people to realize that they should be driving as safely as possible, Maria's Message is making sure that people remember this throughout the year.

Car accidents happen for a number of reasons, and many throughout the state of Ohio could be avoided by simply avoiding distractions. Victims of car accidents caused by another party may have a civil action against an at-fault party for several claims, including pain and suffering, loss of companionship, lost wages, emotional trauma and other damages.
