Spinal cord injuries can have serious consequences

There are many types of accidents that can lead to a spinal cord injury. These include but are not limited to motor vehicle accidents, plane crashes, slip and falls and hospital errors.

Many people think about spinal cord injuries in the same way as they do a back injury. However, it is important to realize that these are not always one in the same. For example, a person could potentially break a vertebrae in his or her back, yet suffer no damage to the spinal cord.

The primary task of the spinal cord is to carry nerve impulses from the brain to all parts of the body. Any injury to the spinal cord can result in serious and long-term damage. This can cause problems such as complete or partial paralysis and permanent or temporary loss of body functions, including body temperature, digestion, balance and breathing.

Due to the seriousness of spinal cord injuries, anybody in this position will require medical attention, often for many years to come. This can include both surgery as well as ongoing treatment and therapy. For this reason, medical bills will begin to mount soon enough.

If you or a family member has suffered a spinal cord injury, you need to learn as much as you can about dealing with such a problem. Along with this, you should consider your legal rights, including whether the responsible party should have to pay for the injuries and related damage.
