What should Ohio residents know about concussion-related injury?

In some of our blog posts, we have discussed people who suffered from head injuries in an accident. Some people might suffer more than one concussion in their life. When this happens, and sometimes when a person only suffers from one concussion, other conditions might occur. Our Ohio readers might like to know about some of these conditions.

What is convulsive motor phenomena?

Convulsive motor phenomena occurs within seconds of the concussion. This condition causes convulsive movements that appear dramatic but usually doesn't require anticonvulsant therapy. Rigid posturing is sometimes present with this condition.

What is mild-cognitive impairment?

Mild-cognitive impairment usually occurs after multiple concussions. It is a condition that is likely to occur later in life. In some cases, this condition can occur without any history of concussion.

What is chronic traumatic encephalopathy?

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a condition that can cause aggressiveness, irritability, suicidal behavior, impulsivity, memory decline and dementia. It is caused by total brain trauma and is associated with athletes. Generally, CTE doesn't become apparent until decades after the brain trauma was received, which is usually when a person is 40 to 50 years old. This condition can only be diagnosed after the patient has died when the brain can be tested for Tau protein using immunoreactive stains.

These conditions all show how destructive concussions can be, even when the effects of the concussion aren't immediately apparent. Anyone who suffers from a head injury should take the possibility of these conditions into account. Medical bills for the concussion and for future medical bills related to it might be suitable components of a lawsuit seeking compensation for your accident.
