Immediate treatment for spinal cord injuries

When a person suffers a spinal cord injury, such as in a motor vehicle accident, it is critical that the effects be minimized. For this reason, treatment of the injury will often begin at the accident scene by emergency responders.

Once a person arrives at the emergency room, medical professionals take over the treatment of this injury, as well as any others. During this time, it is common for doctors to focus on the following:

-- Ensuring the ability to breathe

-- Preventing shock

-- Avoiding complications, such as cardiovascular or respiratory difficulties

-- Immobilizing the head, neck, and spine to prevent additional damage

In some cases, people are sedated to ensure that they do not move during treatment.

In the event that a spinal cord injury is present, the person will be admitted to intensive care for treatment. From there, the medical team, which includes spinal cord specialists, will consider how to proceed. This can include the use of medications, experimental treatment, and of course, surgery.

If individuals suffer spinal cord injuries, there is a good chance they will lose the ability to move some or all parts of their body. However, this is not always the case.

Immediate treatment following an accident is important. This holds true regardless of the injuries and how the person is reacting.

Head and neck injuries are common among people involved in a motor vehicle accident. If another person is responsible for causing the accident, the victim may eventually meet with an attorney to discuss one's rights and ability to recover compensation.
