Rehabilitation after a brain injury takes a team of professionals

We have often discussed how a brain injury can affect every aspect of a person's life. When you think about the effects a brain injury can cause throughout the body, it is easy to understand that a person with a brain injury might have a large team of medical professionals to care for them. The fact of the matter is that the services these medical professionals provide aren't inexpensive.

Some people who have a brain injury might have to see a physical therapist to help with a variety of issues. Physical therapists can help the person to overcome issues that affect motor skills and other problems, if possible. Balance, posture, coordination and strength are some aspects of a person's movements that the physical therapist might look at.

An occupational therapist might help with some daily living skills, such as personal hygiene and cooking. These professionals help patients learn how to shower, dress and go grocery shopping.

A rehabilitation nurse can help with a variety of issues, including pain, mobility, incontinence, communication, cognition, sleeping problems and a host of other issues. This nurse is responsible for helping the patient and the family members learn how to adapt to the new life they have because of the brain injury.

Other professionals, such as neuropsychologists and psychiatrists might also be part of the person's care team. All members of the care team work together to help the patient learn how to live the best life possible after the injury. In some cases, the care team is needed for a long time after the injury because brain injuries often require lengthy rehabilitation.
