Motorcycle accident stats and trends

When compared to passenger vehicles, motorcycles are less visible and certainly less stable. If a car and motorcycle are involved in an accident, it is almost always the motorcyclist who gets the worst in terms of injuries.

When a motorcycle is involved in a crash, the rider does not have much protection. There is no air bag. There is no enclosure to act as a buffer.

According to estimates by the federal government, in 2013 the number of motorcycle deaths was 26 times more than that in passenger cars per mile traveled.

Any type of injury can occur in a motorcycle accident, with head injuries among the most common. This is why it is so important for motorcyclists to wear a helmet.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Highway Loss Data Institute noted that 4,381 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in 2013. Even so, this number has declined over the years. For example, the number of motorcycle deaths decreased seven percent from 2012 to 2013. The agency also shared that motorcycle deaths accounted for approximately 13 percent of all deaths in motor vehicle accidents.

Motorcyclists as well as passenger car drivers should be familiar with these statistics and trends. This type of information helps everybody understand that these accidents are not only common, but can be fatal.

It would be in the best interest of everybody on the road for the number of motorcycle accidents to continue to decline. Even if this does happen, however, there is no way to entirely prevent accidents. There will always be crashes between vehicles, causing injury or death. Those who are the victims of accidents caused by others can and should find out what their legal options are.
