Are you at risk for a traumatic brain injury?

Naturally, anyone in Ohio could suffer from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) if the right set of circumstances arise. These are noted in car accidents, falls, workplace accidents, sports injuries, assaults, and many other situations.

However, stats do show who is at highest risk based on the groups and types of people who suffer from TBIs most often. If you're in one of these groups, you could be at a higher risk than someone who is not, though this doesn't discount the random nature of accidents and injuries.

For example, men get TBIs more often than women. Research has shown that they are 1.5 times as likely as women to suffer from these injuries.

Age also factors into it. There are three age groups that are thought to be at the highest risk:-- Very young children between the ages of 0 and 4 year old-- Teens between the ages of 15 and 19 years old-- Retirement-aged adults who are at least 65 years old

The reasons for this can be varied. For example, young children can be hurt if they lack coordination or the ability to avoid harm, teens could be hurt in car accidents since they are inexperienced drivers, and the elderly could be injured when old age makes falls more likely.

Interestingly, there are also some links to ethnicity and race. While these may not change the odds of getting a TBI, it has been found that African American individuals stand a greater chance of passing away from a TBI than other groups.

Those who have suffered from serious brain injuries may have their entire lives altered, and they must know what rights they have to compensation.
