Military's treatment of brain injuries showing promising results

Military service members who have suffered from traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress syndrome have often been ignored or misunderstood by the military, society, and those in the medical field. That might soon change because of a little-known alliance between military medicine and a private foundation that has set up three TBI-dedicated facilities on three military bases.

These three Intrepid Spirit Centers were built by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The patients who have accessed the treatments at these facilities are said to have been highly responsive. In fact, there is said to a 90-percent success rate for patients to return to their career and family. This shows that the interdisciplinary measures that are used at these centers show great promise.

There are two new centers opening at the beginning of 2016 and four more slated to open in 2017. These centers will follow the methodology of the centers that are already open, which have treated more than 3,000 service members. At these centers, the patient meets with a team of doctors who use psychology, neuroimaging, and traditional medicine. Some patients also use art therapy, acupuncture, and yoga during the 4-month program at the center.

This program is geared toward the military, but it does show that comprehensive treatment programs can help people who have suffered brain injuries or who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome. Civilians who have a TBI or PTSD might opt to seek compensation from the party responsible for their injury. If compensation is awarded, they might be able to afford comprehensive programs that can help them to recover from their medical conditions.
