According to the March of Dimes Premature Birth Report Card, Ohio overall is slightly above average in its rate of preterm births and was given a grade of C. Mahoning County, however, received an F.

Drug addiction and infant death: Who's to blame?

med mal baby in crib.jpgBirth injuries are slowly declining, according to a report issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRC). According to the agency, overall birth injuries in the U.S. declined from 2.64 to 1.91 per 1,000 live births between 2004 and 2012.

Food poisoning in Ohio

There have been several outbreaks of different types of food poisoning in Chipotle restaurants across the United States. There are at least a dozen Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in the Columbus, Ohio, region and many more throughout the state. Although it is unclear exactly how many people became sick across Ohio, it appears that at least a dozen people in the Cleveland area were sickened in recent months by E. coli bacteria after eating at Chipotle restaurants. The outbreak has prompted extensive cleaning and revamping of food safety procedures in the chain's restaurants throughout the country.

Taser deaths: Part 2

According to a recent Washington Post story, at least 48 people in the United States have died this year after being shocked with Tasers. This post tells the stories of some of those 48.

Traumatic brain injury and youth football

At least nine youth football players have died in the United States since September while playing the game. Last month, a 9-year-old boy in Pomeroy, Ohio, collapsed and died. In Hubbard Township, near Youngstown, Ohio, a player suffered a traumatic brain injury during the second quarter of a high school football game in September. He was rushed to Cleveland for surgery; at the time, no one knew how long his recovery would be.

Knee replacement may cause more pain, not less

knee.jpgMore than a million people each year undergo knee replacement surgery. As of 2012, at least 4.5 million people had had at least one knee replaced. A total or partial knee replacement uses an artificial joint to replace diseased bone and relieve the patient's pain. Most knee replacement procedures are undertaken to provide relief from the pain caused by arthritis.

How hierarchy in hospitals causes medical errors

medmalnurses4.jpgThe findings of an international study show that nurses and support staff are sometimes hesitant to voice their concerns when they see something wrong during surgery, resulting in surgical errors that cause serious injury and death. This has prompted a team of Australian researchers to develop and test ways to improve communication among members of surgical teams.

Do weekend births result in more negative outcomes?

birth injury african american baby.jpgBabies who are born in hospitals on weekends in the United Kingdom have a slightly higher risk of birth injuries and deaths. Mothers also have a higher risk of negative outcomes. This finding resulted from a study conducted between 2010 and 2012 in National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in England. During this time, 1,332,835 deliveries and 1,349,599 births were studied.
