Are there any special rules for tanker trucks to follow?

When you are on the highway, chances are good that you will come across at least one tanker truck. These tanker trucks are sometimes used to transport non-hazardous materials; however, they are sometimes used to transport gasoline and other dangerous liquids. With the sheer weight and size of tanker trucks, it is crucial for all tanker truck drivers to follow appropriate safety measures. This is even more true when the tanker is filled with hazardous materials.

Are there any special requirements to drive a tanker truck?

All tanker truck drivers must have a commerical driver's license. There are other stipulations on the requirements if the tanker is transporting certain materials. For example, if the tanker is being used to transport hazardous materials, a special endorsement is necessary for the driver. Additionally, hazardous material transporters must undergo special training before transporting the materials.

Are there any actions specifically forbidden for truckers hauling hazardous materials?

Truckers who are transporting hazardous materials do have special rules they must follow. They are forbidden by federal regulations from using a cellphone while driving. They can use a hands-free phone, but not one that requires hand operation. They mustn't text while driving. They mustn't drive while distracted. They must ensure that the proper placards are used to identify the type of material they are carrying.

If you are struck by a tanker truck, the training, endorsements, and actions of the driver can have a big impact on your case. Those points should all be the focus of the investigation if you opt to pursue compensation for the accident.
