Why are summer rains dangerous to drivers?

With summer weather closing in, most Columbus residents are excited about what's to come. They are ready for warm daily temperatures, as this means they will be able to spend additional time outdoors.

But did you know that summer weather can have an impact on driving conditions? If you find yourself on the road with the rain coming down, you need to know which steps you can take to improve your safety.

Before we go any further, remember this: there is nothing wrong with pulling to the side of the road, far out of the way of traffic, if you are unable to see what is happening in front of you.

Summer rains are dangerous to drivers because it cuts down on visibility, reduces tire contact with the road and can cause flooding.

As a driver, you need to take a few key steps when the rain begins to fall. First and foremost, be sure to slow down. Along with this, make sure you keep both hands on the steering wheel. Also, don't attempt to use cruise control in the rain.

When the rain begins to fall, drivers should lower their speed. Neglecting to do so increases the likelihood of an accident.

As a driver in a rainstorm, there is more to staying safe than adjusting your driving style. You also need to watch what others are doing, as it is often the other driver who is the one responsible for causing an accident.

If you are involved in a car accident, regardless of weather conditions, contact police and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
