EEG Studies Can Improve Outlook For Stroke Victims

The brain damage resulting from a stroke can have a devastating impact on the victim. Historically, there has been little the medical community could do to help patients recover from strokes. Fortunately, a new study provides optimism for stroke victims and their families.

University of Queensland researchers discovered that Quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) studies of the stroke victim's brain can help determine the extent of brain injury, the prognosis and which forms of treatment will be most effective. QEEGs would ultimately minimize the extent of harm a stroke inflicts upon each patient, while allowing doctors to gain greater knowledge on strokes and brain damage as a whole.

Most stroke victims receive tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) following their strokes. Physicians then examine the patients' symptoms, hoping to see improvement. QEEG studies would allow doctors to actually see TPA's affect on the brain, rather than exclusively relying on symptoms to gauge treatment.

Further, QEEG studies could help reduce doctors' failure to diagnose a stroke.

If you or a loved one has been seriously harmed by stroke resulting from medication or negligence, contact an experienced Ohio medical malpractice attorney to discuss your legal options.
