Premature Births Report Card: Ohio Barely Passing With "C" Grade

Family Sues Over Third Degree Burns On Infant's Hand

Several months after hospital nurses inflicted severe third-degree burns on a 2-month-old baby girl's hand, the girl's parents are suing the hospital. According to the lawsuit, nurses mistakenly wrapped the baby's hand around a piece of equipment while they attempted to start an IV. The equipment was hot enough to cause third-degree burns on the inside of her hand.

Study: Doctors Should Warn About Pregnancy Antidepressant Risks

New research is suggesting that doctors need to start explaining the risks of taking antidepressants during a pregnancy. In a review of 100 previous studies, researchers from several medical schools came to the concerning conclusion that antidepressants can cause serious risks for mothers and newborns. At the same time, they did not see any pregnancy or birth benefits from antidepressants to offset those risks.

Severe Birth Complications Becoming More Common In The U.S.

Although serious childbirth complications are relatively uncommon in the United States, new research says that they increased by 75 percent between 1998 and 2009. This might reflect changing childbirth trends - doctors and medical staff may need to respond appropriately to provide safe care to all mothers.
