Cerebral Palsy And Long-Term Care: Another Nurse Convicted

In another development in the tragic case of Ohio cerebral palsy caretakers, a third nurse has pleaded guilty to charges that she neglected her patient. The patient died of severe consequences of medical and nutritional neglect - she essentially starved to death at the age of 14.

This case underscores the enormous importance of finding a long-term source of income to finance adequate care for some people with cerebral palsy. While advances in our understanding of cerebral palsy are allowing patients to live longer and longer, high quality care can be expensive. In many cases, it is possible to hold a doctor or other medical staff accountable for the errors that can cause cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders that can occur for a variety of reasons. Oxygen starvation and premature birth are two common causes but there is much we have yet to learn about these disorders.

Parents face many obstacles when a child is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. One of the most difficult challenges may be figuring out how to pay for high quality continuing care. If negligent doctors are responsible for the disorder, it is only fair to require them to help shoulder the burden of the consequences of their actions. Medical malpractice claims allow families to seek justice in the form of damages awards.
