Overdoses Kill More In Ohio Than Auto Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents are often cited as the top unnatural cause of death in the United States. In Ohio, drug overdoses are the top killer.

According to Ohio Health Department's Violence and Injury Prevention program, overdoses killed 1,765 Ohioans in 2011, where 1,105 died in traffic fatalities. The data reveals a massive drug-use problem, and prescription drugs are perhaps the biggest problem.

Of the 2011 fatal overdose tally, prescription opioids were involved approximately half of the time. The term, "prescription opioids" describes an entire of class of drugs, including OxyContin.

In terms of street - or outright illegal - drugs, heroin was the top killer. Heroin was linked to roughly 25 percent of the fatal drug overdoses in Ohio. However, a combination of drugs was found in 70 percent of the drug-related deaths.

Parents of young overdose victims may be able to hold drug-dealers or other wrongdoers accountable in a wrongful death lawsuit, depending on the circumstances of each case. For example, a 25-year-old man who gives a 16-year-old girl heroin and fails to call 911 when she begins overdosing may face not only serious criminal charges, but a wrongful death suit from the victim's parents.
