Elective Deliveries: On The Outs At Hospitals, Risks Remain, Pt. 2

Our last post introduced a developing trend at American hospitals. More facilities are responding to a growing consensus that elective deliveries are unreasonably dangerous for mothers and infants-hospitals around the nation are beginning to outright ban these procedures.

An elective delivery is any procedure that speeds up a delivery in the absence of a medically justifiable reason. Induced labor is one common procedure.

One Ohio hospital serves as an excellent example of how important it is to avoid elective procedures. In the three years leading up to its new policy banning elective deliveries, the hospital saw 16 stillbirths. After the same facility forbade its doctors from performing elective procedures, that rate dropped to just three stillbirths in the next two and a half years.

Hospitals around the nation are taking note of results like this. According to recent studies, more than 60 percent of facilities are now using policies to avoid these procedures. This is a positive development for expectant families everywhere-but this figure still leaves many hospitals with dangerous policies in place. If an elective procedure results in birth injuries, the hospital may be liable.
