Study Brings Insight To Pre-eclampsia And Cerebral Palsy Link

Most of the medical community believes that pre-eclampsia brings an increased risk of cerebral palsy to the infant, but not much was known about this relationship. A new study from Norway makes some new revelations about this mysterious link.

Researchers found that when a mother suffers from pre-eclampsia, the baby's chance of developing cerebral palsy (CP) increases by 2.5 percent. Remarkably, this risk increases if the child is born prematurely or has a low birth weight.

Specifically, the study made the following findings regarding infants whose mothers suffered from pre-eclampsia during pregnancy:

  • Babies born full-term but at a weight in the 10th percentile or less have a 3.2 percent chance of cerebral palsy
  • Infants born pre-term, between 32 and 36 weeks, have a 4.64 percent risk of cerebral palsy

This groundbreaking study may make serious inroads for mitigating the risks to babies whose mothers suffer pre-eclampsia during pregnancy. Perhaps doctors will order full bed-rest or avoiding inducing early labor so that babies have a better chance of going full-term before birth.

If you believe that your pre-eclampsia was mismanaged, unnecessarily causing harm to you or your baby, contact an experienced Ohio birth injury attorney to discuss your legal options.
