Bellevue woman dies in fiery car crash

A 36-year-old woman died in a car accident that took place while her vehicle was stopped at a traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 20 and North Sandusky Street in Bellevue, Ohio. The accident occurred at 11:11 p.m. as police officers were in pursuit of a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis that had been reported as driving recklessly. That pursued car rammed into the back of the woman's 2002 Chevrolet Blazer. The speed and force of the impact sent her car through the intersection and also resulted in it catching on fire.

The female motorist, a resident of Bellevue, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident. The car that struck her, driven by a 24-year-old Massillon man, kept going through the intersection, hitting a 2008 Buick Lacrosse and itself catching on fire. The driver of that third vehicle, a 54-year-old male resident of Bellevue, and his three passengers, all suffered serious injuries and were rushed to two local hospitals.

As with many Ohio car accidents, the causes of the crash are being looked into after the fact by law enforcement investigators. At this time, it was unknown whether alcohol or drug use played a role in causing the accident, but those are among the frequent causes of accidents resulting in death or serious injuries.

One thing seems clear. A motorist obeying the law by stopping her vehicle at a traffic signal should not have to risk losing her life as a result of the reckless conduct of others. Wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits brought in such cases play an important role not only in compensating the victims and their families, to the extent possible, for their tragic losses, but also send a message to careless motorists who place others at risk.
