Hit and run driver kills 5-year-old boy

A 5-year-old boy walking with another child, an older cousin, to a school bus stop on a Friday morning in Cleveland, Ohio, was struck down and killed by a vehicle driven by a hit and run driver who reportedly callously drove away. Hit and run accidents are among the most horrific of Ohio car accidents, in that accident victims are left to bleed, suffer, and often die on the street without needed assistance.

The law mandates that a motorist who is involved in such an accident stop, attempt to render assistance or summon emergency responders, and remain on the scene to facilitate law enforcement investigation, as well as to provide one's identity and insurance information. Efforts to flee the scene not only place the lives of accident victims at risk, but also constitute efforts to evade the police and to deny victims and their families the right and ability to bring personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits.

Witnesses to this accident said that the child was hit at a corner by a minivan or SUV that was light colored. The accident occurred at Denison Avenue and West 37th Street. The child was a kindergarten student. Following the tragedy, a candlelight vigil was held by the child's teachers, classmates, and others outraged by the incident and saddened by the loss. The child's family set a number of balloons free as a remembrance, and issued an impassioned plea for the reckless driver to come forward and face justice for what he or she has done.

The police investigation of the accident is ongoing, and includes an examination of a video recording made by a surveillance camera at a nearby laundromat.
