Connecticut malpractice victim wins large settlement

A jury in Bridgeport, Connecticut has awarded $9.2 million to a woman from Fairfield who endured a series of medical blunders while being treated at Bridgeport Hospital. The woman, 65 years old at the time, was admitted to the hospital in 2007 with a urinary tract infection, but ended up staying for over two months. She will also spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

The problems began with a dosage mistake. Doctors overdosed the woman with a blood thinner six times, which led to bleeding and the formation of a blood clot in her abdomen. She then suffered cardiac arrest due to the blood clot. After she was revived, she had to undergo emergency surgery.

The woman then developed MRSA, which is a very serious bacterial infection that resists most antibiotics. This infection led to the formation of an abscess on her neck that was roughly the size of an orange. The woman had to undergo more surgeries to cure the abscess, one of which involved removing part of the bone in her shoulder. The incision from the surgeries opened five years later, which caused some of the woman's organs to protrude into her skin. This incident severely restricted her mobility and left her wheelchair-bound.

The malpractice trial lasted 2 1/2 weeks, and hospital officials did not indicate that they would appeal the verdict. One hospital spokesperson has stated that several protocols have been designed to help reduce the risk of medication errors since this incident occurred.

Any person that enters a hospital for treatment should expect to be given the correct medications in the correct dosages. This is an extreme case; however, even smaller medical errors may be deserving of a trial, especially if the victim's quality of life has been seriously altered. The woman in this case was awarded such a high amount due to the pain and suffering caused by the hospital. The money will also help cover the costs of the continuing medical care she will need.
