Medical errors result in 1 death and 1 permanent injury

Franklin, Ohio, residents who have a surgery or go through another medical procedure may worry about a mistake happening. In some cases, medical mistakes could lead to permanent injuries or even death, which is why health care providers need to be held to a high standard. Recent news from San Diego may make you want to reconsider your medical options in the future; according to an article from Oct. 24, one patient has died and another is now reliant on dialysis because of preventable medical errors.

Sharp Memorial Hospital, the home of one of these unfortunate events, has been fined $100,000 for one incident where a 53-year-old man lost a perfectly healthy kidney when they accidentally removed it during surgery. In another case, Alvarado Hospital had an elderly patient fall out of bed and die when she hit her head. For that patient's death, the hospital had to pay a $50,000 penalty. What's scary is that these events aren't completely uncommon. In fact, in California alone, nine different hospitals were fined $775,000 in total due to errors that could have led to serious injuries or death for patients.

The striking news is that the surgeon who removed the wrong kidney didn't have CT scans present due to forgetting his login information for remote access. In that case, the man's cancerous kidney was not removed; his healthy kidney was taken out instead. It seems obscene, since taking a few minutes to retrieve the images would have prevented such an accident.

Although these cases both happened in California, the medical community in Ohio, Michigan, and any other state could potentially have the same problems. That's why it's important to report any medical negligence immediately.
