Child faces wrongful death due tonsillectomy

Ohioans shouldn't be strangers to routine medical procedures like tonsillectomies or wisdom tooth removal, but as you should know, it can go wrong. Most of the time, smaller things like breaking stitches won't result in a wrongful death, but in this case, a routine tonsillectomy left one little girl brain dead in California. The 13-year-old girl is now at the center of a case between her parents and the hospital. The hospital would like to take the child off life support, and her parents think it's too soon to let go.

This horrible story started when the child went to the hospital for a routine tonsillectomy. She had problems almost immediately following the procedure; her mother claimed that the girl sat up in bed and was bloody, holding a cup of her own blood. The staff allegedly tried to help and comfort her, but the child kept bleeding until she went into cardiac arrest a few hours later. Staff members had to provide transfusions because of blood loss, according to the news.

According to the news, the child was pronounced brain dead on Dec. 12. However, her parents would like to have a neurologist further examine the girl to make sure she really is brain dead and to determine her condition. The hospital wants to remove her from the support quickly, according to the report, but the family doesn't believe the tests that were done were sufficiently independent for a diagnosis.

This medical error has left this girl brain dead, and at least two doctors have confirmed her death. These kinds of errors shouldn't go excused. If you've lost a loved one due to medical errors, it's important to consider your legal options and obligations.
