Man suffers from torn small intestine during surgery

Franklin, Ohioans are likely aware that surgeries have inherent risks. Even one that is completed perfectly can cause damage to a person, and side effects or complications are always possible. However, this differs significantly from a true medical mistake like this man faced after his surgery in 2002. According to the news from Nov. 20, the man had a four-hour surgery during which his intestine was damaged. Now, a jury has ruled in his favor to the tune of $6.7 million.

According to reports, the surgeon claims that he knew he punctured the outer layer of the man's intestine during the surgery, but he didn't think it was deep enough to cause problems for him. However, the night following the operation came, and the man was complaining of serious abdominal pain. The next day, he was suffering from a fever and a high pulse rate, and on top of that, his urinary output suffered and white blood cell count fell. Two days after the surgery was completed, the man had to be placed on a ventilator while his organs began to fail.

The surgeon allegedly didn't even know about the perforation until four days later, even though the patient was in decline. The surgeon completed a needle aspiration to see if there was an intestinal leak; there was. A surgery was completed the same day, but the infection had already spread causing the need for three additional surgeries and resulting in severe bed sores. The man, 57 at the time of the surgery, was unable to work, and his wife had to quit her job to take care of him. According to the news, the man and his wife have now won the lawsuit and been awarded $6.7 million.

Medical mistakes can happen even when surgery isn't required. A misdiagnosis, a prescription error or other acts of negligence can cause death or serious injury. Personal injury attorneys can help those who have suffered or families of those who have died pursue compensation through the civil court system.
