New technology could help eliminate medication errors

Franklin, Ohio, residents should be aware that when you go to the hospital, pharmacy or other location for medical treatment, anything is really possible. You trust that a doctor knows what to give you for pain or for a medical treatment, but in some cases, a mistake is made. A wrongful death case can be the result of a prescription error or other medical negligence, so anything that can help eliminate those errors is welcome. Now, the University of Maryland Medical Center is claiming that the use of RFID technology can help eliminate medication errors.

RFID technology is used to manage the drug supply, according to news from Dec. 4. The hospital pharmacies can use it to help identify drugs that are about to expire or drugs that have been recalled, saving patients from terrible side effects of drug mix-ups. Prior to using this technology, the medical center allegedly had an error rate as high as 1 in 20, but now, since the technology was implemented in 2012, it has allegedly dropped to 1 in 4,000. This is obviously a significant improvement, and on top of this, it has allegedly helped speed up the time it takes to prepare drug trays, as well. That means patients will get the right drugs, in the right doses, without errors a majority of the time, and they will get them faster.

If you've ever had to deal with a medical issue resulting from a medical error, you know that anything that helps make the hospital safer or more efficient is the key to success. This news may help prevent incidents in the future, but if you've been injured or lost a loved one due to prescription mix-ups, you may want to consider taking legal action.
