$62 million awarded due to error in ectopic pregnancy procedure

For Ohio physicians and facilities, many procedures are considered simple or routine. The same is true across the country, and patients often have less stress with such procedures as they trust in the fact that their physician and medical team has performed the procedure many times successfully. Sometimes, issues occur even with so-called simple procedures; those incidents can result in pregnancy-related injury and long-term consequences for patients.

In another state, one woman is living without her legs or full use of her hearing following an issue with a routine procedure. According to a lawsuit filed by the woman, the medical staff punctured her intestine during a procedure to remove an ectopic pregnancy. The suit indicates that the puncture caused an infection, and the infection required the partial amputation of both legs.

According to documents, the woman was discharged from the hospital following the removal of her ectopic pregnancy. At that time, she reported excruciating pain. She returned three days later with those complaints, which is when her legs were amputated.

The woman was awarded $62 million following a jury trial. The jury awarded $4 million for medical expenses, $38 million for pain and suffering the woman may experience in the future, and $20 million for pain and suffering she already experienced. According to an attorney for the hospital, the defendants plan to appeal the amount of the award.

Injury or trauma that is caused by the negligence, errors or wrong actions of medical staff can be devastating for individuals. The woman in this case may deal with work issues, social issues and daily living issues for the rest of her life. According to her lawyer, the jury system worked in this case to support the victim, who suffered what he called horrible injuries due to no fault of her own.
