FOR SERIOUS INJURIES, Call the Lawyers Other Lawyers CallTM

Ohio brain injuries are often permanent

When someone incurs a traumatic brain injury, there are no guarantees that the individual will ever be the same again. There also may be longtime medical care needed or the possibility of future problems developing, such as Alzheimer's disease. Those injured by the recklessness of others may have a realistic suit they can file against the accountable party in order to be compensated for their medical expenses, as well as pain and suffering, and other damages.

One man who was rollerblading was hit by a drunk driver 10 years ago. Smashing his head on the windshield of the driver's car, he suffered a traumatic brain injury. His parents were basically told he wasn't going to make it, as the doctors took him in for surgery.

But, he did make it. Now he says he believes almost wholeheartedly that he is going to end up with Alzheimer's. He also stated that it "scares the crap" out of him.

In Ohio, a new bill has been proposed called "Annie's Law" -- named after a girl who was killed by a drunk driver. The bill would require anyone who is convicted of a DUI to have a mandatory ignition-locking system in his or her car. The device would require them to breathe into it ensuring that they are not drunk before the ignition will start.

This type of device has been used in other states and per Mothers Against Drunk Driving, deaths from DUIs have substantially decreased. If the bill is passed in Ohio, the state will join 20 other states in making a statement against drunk drivers. While Ohio brain injuries can be caused by a multitude of different things, decreasing drunk driving on our Ohio roads is one step in the right direction.
