CrossFit under fire after spinal cord injury, other incidents

When Ohio residents go to the gym to work out, they expect that their bodies will become healthier and stronger. Generally, these individuals do not anticipate suffering from spinal cord injuries because of the nature of their workouts. However, a new study from a major university shows that the workout system CrossFit could lead to serious injury. This report has sparked a lawsuit from one CrossFit gym owner, who argues that the workout plan is totally safe.

Despite arguments to the contrary, evidence exists that people do injure themselves while participating in CrossFit. In one recent video, a trainer in Colorado was shown severely injuring his spine while he was performing a weightlifting maneuver at an athletic competition. That video and other information may have an impact on the number of customers who choose to frequent CrossFit establishments throughout Ohio and the rest of the nation.

Information from an Ohio State University study shows, though, that CrossFit may lead to an increased risk of metabolic and musculoskeletal injuries, including spinal cord injury. The authors of the study say that such intense training programs should be carefully evaluated because of the potential for serious personal injury. Such wounds could even lead to permanent disability, depending on the circumstances.

Although the owner of the CrossFit gym maintains that athletes can be hurt during any sport -- not just this high-intensity program -- it is possible that the workout increases the risk of injury. Victims who have suffered spinal cord injury because of inappropriate workout guidance or other athletic accidents may be eligible for financial compensation. A personal injury attorney in Ohio may be able to provide additional information about victims' legal rights and options after an injurious incident.
