Lawsuit: Patient froze to death in morgue compartment

In a disturbing story so horrible it has previously been considered only an urban myth, a patient allegedly died in a Los Angeles hospital morgue after regaining consciousness.

A California man is suing White Memorial Center and one of its physicians after he received his wife's mangled body following a heart attack.

Initially, he believed that hospital staff had negligently handled her remains, post-mortem. Upon closer examination, her wounds were consistent with someone desperately trying to escape a confined space.

A medical expert is corroborating the theory that she was wrongly declared dead and put into a morgue compartment. She later awoke and tried escaping from before freezing to death. Her unexplained injuries included a broken nose, bruises and deep cuts. The woman was 80 at the time of death.

While the bone-chilling details of this lawsuit are unusual, premature pronouncements of death aren't that rare.

We often see stories where a doctor explains that a patient was "clinically dead" before miraculously coming back to life. There are certainly situations that the medical community cannot yet fully explain, but it is likely that a significant portion of these "miracle cases" are situations where hospital staff overlooked subtle signs of life.

It makes you wonder: How many times does the patient experience a "miracle revival" but there is no hospital staff present to help stabilize vitals and coax the patient back to conscious life?
