Ohio doctors caught importing unapproved drugs for profit boost

Seven Ohio oncologists were recently found guilty of bypassing the nation's drug-regulation system to provide their patients with unapproved medication. The doctors will have to pay a combined $2.6 million in fines for violating federal laws.

The physicians' scheme involved various cancer-fighting medications such as Zometa, Kutril, Taxotere, Gemzar and Eloxatin. By circumventing the government's regulatory framework, the doctors chanced the safety of their patients in the interest of boosting their profits.

The oncologists imported the unapproved drugs at a discount, yet billed patients the full cost.

Such acts of greed have no place in Ohio doctors' offices and clinics. Physicians have a challenging occupation that often demands long hours, but doctors are compensated generously for their effort. It is disturbing when well-paid physicians practice medicine to maximize profits when it conflicts with the patients' best interests.

Other unscrupulous acts that sometimes occur in Ohio hospitals and clinics include:

  • Unnecessary surgeries: When a patient is mislead into believing that an expensive operation is necessary.
  • Fraudulent billing: When the health care provider bills for fictitious treatments or misrepresents their cost.
  • Misrepresenting experience and expertise: Some doctors lead patients to believe they are "experts" in an area of medicine when they really have little experience or qualification. This is common in cosmetic surgery.

If you believe you are the victim of unfair practices, review your legal options with an experienced Ohio medical malpractice attorney.
